Our Get2It programme caters for families with preschool and primary school aged children with ASD.
Get2It is designed to provide services that complement each other.
1. Workshops
Providing families the opportunity to learn new strategies and concepts increases their ability to take ownership of their own situation and empowers them to provide better support to their child with ASD. The workshops cover:
Understanding Autism
• Diagnosis: What is ASD/ Asperger’s, where from here?
• Moving forward; coping strategies and improving family wellbeing
• Introduction to “Reach out”, family support service and finding appropriate services in the Auckland region.
Strategies for behaviour
• Understanding behaviour
• How to ‘read’ your child’s behaviour
• Understanding functions of behaviour
• What strategies to use to deal with behaviour
• How to implement them at home/school/ community
2. Parents Exchange
An innovative parent support group, based on peer modelling, proposing a range of workshops on relevant topics supported by hands on help and support to implement strategies and tools introduced. The long term goal is to create a supportive community of parents who help and support each other.
3. Skills through Play
Our Skills Through Play programme caters for parents who wish to teach their children skills through play. The play environment provides opportunities for practicing skills like language and socialisation. Being able to play with other children in a meaningful way increases a child’s happiness, but it also teaches them important lessons about the world and how to get along with people as well as help abstract cognitive skills.
These sessions are especially helpful for families with children aged between 2 and 6 years old.
4. Reach Out, family support
This is our holistic ‘hands on’ outreach service, led by family’s / whanau’s priorities and values with guidance from a trained and experienced staff member.
Families can access this service when their child has been recently diagnosed with ASD, but is also available during those difficult transition periods.
Intensity of a family’s involvement depend on their specific needs, such as regular home visits, phone calls, as well as providing guidance in implementing strategies and concepts
learned at workshops and skills through play sessions.
Our service focusses on empowering parents, providing coping and behavioural strategies and fostering family resilience. We provide families with an action plan that helps them achieve their goals, in the short term and long term.
